Bram grabbed his cell phone. “Roman, we need a diversion. We’re being followed. Yeah, I know
the road. All right, see you there.” He dropped the phone into the console catch-all. “Hang on!”
Mitch reached for the hold bar over the window as Bram careened wildly into an alley.

Chapter Ten
Mitch shoved his stomach down as they shot out of town with the Crown Victoria barely lengths
behind them. High speed chases didn’t have the same adrenaline rush appeal when you were actually
a part of it. Mitch didn’t want to look at the speedometer. It was a fact Explorers and ninety didn’t mix
well. “So the amulet crap was real?” he said, trying to keep his heart in his chest.
“Yes, Mitch.”
“So what the hell is going on?” He closed his eyes when Bram swept into a curve, tires squealing
in protest as they bit at asphalt for purchase, then let out his breath when he could see the horizon on
the other side as Bram juiced the vehicle for more speed.
“I don’t know, not really.” Bram’s jaw tightened as a turn off came into view.
Mitch sat up straight. “Hey! That’s Brooke’s SUV!”
“I know.”
Mitch felt his stomach shrivel when she stepped out in plain sight and flagged the other car, as if
she were expecting them. “Christ! They’re stopping. We have to go back!” he shouted as they barreled
right passed Brooke. Black smoke billowed as the other car hit their brakes, skidding to a stop a short
distance beyond the Toyota. Whatever she had planned, had worked to get their attention. Mitch’s
stomach did another flip. He gripped the dash in front of him wishing he could tear the damn thing
out.
“Don’t worry. She’ll be fine.”
“What are you? Mental? That car just chased us for ten miles!” Mitch tried to turn in his seat but
he couldn’t see anything now. Bram picked up his cell when it rang.
He gave a terse response and hung up again.
“You have lost it, Bram,” Mitch muttered. “How you ever got tied up with this family, I’ll never
know, but you need to come home. You have got to get yourself away from these lunatics. Car chases
and crazy stories about witches and wolves.”
Mitch was still fuming when Bram and he arrived, finding two men bound and gagged behind
their car, hidden from the highway. Not that it mattered. There hadn’t been another car outside of
town at all. “Great. Now they’re taking hostages,” he grumbled. Bram aimed a warning right at him.
That was when Roman stepped into view holding an automatic rifle, and Mitch snapped his jaw shut.
He with the gun, rules.
“We need to get them off the main road to question them,” Roman was saying. Bram didn’t
hesitate, simply grabbed one of the two and dragged the dead weight, who wasn’t even struggling
against his bonds, into the trees. Mitch hobbled out of the vehicle on his crutches.
“What is with you people?” he yelled at Roman, gesturing emphatically. “They’re not terrorists!”
He pointed to the one left next to the car. In fact, they were nothing but two young guys in jeans and t-
shirts.
“No, they’re not. They’re Hunters,” he said with absolute chilled confidence.
“It isn’t against the law to hunt,” Mitch exasperatedly intoned. Bram came back and brushing his
hands off, shackled the remaining young man and forced him into the trees with the first. He didn’t go
as willingly, kicking and struggling against the ropes wrapped around his wrists and Bram.
“Mitch,” Roman snapped with icy meaning, stabbing him with a stone hard, black glare. “Stay
here and stay out of the way.”
“Wait! Where’s Brooke?” Mitch was worried because he hadn’t seen her since he and his brother
had pulled up. She had been there, standing right next to the road. Where was she?
